2/3/2012 Letter from Richard Bews after Karen (only) applied for a pass to The March Gift fair Hi Karen Chan, Ronald Andreassand, Anita Glucina & Carly Chan Andreassend of Chan Andreasssand We see you have registered to attend the NZ Gift & Homeware Fairs this year. On reviewing your application we have concluded that you do not meet the relevant criteria to attend as a retailer/buyer/visitor.
Accordingly we have declined your application and access to the event will be denied at show entry. We ask that this policy be respected as refusal of entry on site may cause embarrassment.
If you would like to make a submission to investigate your eligibility please feel free to send this through by return email.

As you would probably realise we have also exhibited at the Giftware shows for several years and due to the economic circumstances are unable to afford the exhibition costs. During which time there were many visitors who were not buyers or even related to the industry coming through and just an afternoon out.
I would appreciate you allowing Karen to attend so she can source products for jewellery.
kind regards Ronald Andreassend __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2/3/2012 Hi Ronald I have discussed this with the team and we will allow Karen only to attend. Regards Richard
16 August 2012 Dear Karen , We regret to inform you that you will not be able to attend our Gift & Homeware Fair. The company and business sector details that you registered with do not match the criteria to gain entry. This is a trade only event and visitors who attend must do so for the purpose of retail buying. Best regards, Susan McCarty Buyer Relations Manager NZ Gift Fairs ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 16 August 2012 Hi Susan,
I don`t understand why there would be an issue. We have exhibited for many years are also NZ producers and designers and buy from components and accessories for the store from exhibitors. Our store has been here for 23 years and well known in both the NZ gift and art industry. I am not sure how our business does not match the criteria of the trade show attendee. There has never been a problem in the past here or at similar trade shows in Australia. I had a similar email from Richard Bews at the Autumn Gift Fair and he accepted Karens pass. kind regards Ronald Andreassend ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 17 August 2012 Hi Ronald
As previously explained to you our exhibitors are interested in talking with retailers who are attending the fair with the intent of buying product for their retail out lets and as such this is a private function whereby we have the rights to invite or decline who attends. Regards Richard

It seems like a heavy handed manner in deciding whether my business is a retail or not. My customers would certainly be surprised that I am not considered a retailer, along with suppliers. You are welcome to come up here and see for yourself, perhaps do some shopping we take all credit cards. Retail rate of course. From discussions with other people it seems this is more about us being on the Gift Directory mailout inviting Retailers to come to our store while they are in Auckland visiting the Gift Show. From what I hear a big mistake, from being barred attending and even exhibiting in future whether as a visitor, buyer, retailer or exhibitor. Yes you might consider yourself a private function, but it is also an industry event and this is New Zealand. I like to think we do things differently here. I take it that the people who were previously mentioned as being black listed still stands.
kind regards Ronald Andreassend ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 21 August 2012 Letter sent to Richard Bews General Manager of XPO Exhibitions
Dear Richard, I was expecting the courtesy of a reply to my email sent to you, regarding the rejection of Karen Chan`s pass, cc to Susan McCarty, Alyssa Thorpe, Sandra Gorringe 10.12am 17 August. As you are both the XPO General Manager and on the executive of the New Zealand Gift Trade Association and that XPO has been appointed by the Association to produce the Gift Fair on their behalf, I have included the executive as well. Apologies if the email addresses are incorrect as they were on each person's website. This may allow you to come to some consensus to allow Karen to source products, catch up with trade friends as well as check that no exhibitor has infringed our copyright before it goes to market. A situation we take seriously as no doubt at the very least one or two executive members would no doubt do as well.
As we both know this is the second time this year that personnel from Chan Andreassend have been banned from attending the Gift Fair show, even though there was no request for them to attend. The only passes that have been applied for have been for Karen. The first time was considerably inconvenient as you banned her at 1pm on the Friday before the show 1.19pm and rescinded at 2.17pm that afternoon. This time considerably more so.
I would like to suggest that you approve the pass and allow her to go about her business unheeded, otherwise I may consider publishing all emails along with commentary and analysis on my websites, blogs, Facebook and Linkedin, as well as direct to my mailing list.
I am sure the wider NZ Gift & Homeware Industries will be surprised that the Gift Trade Show has been defined as a "private function" and you can remove anyone at any time if you so choose. Regardless of the legality of the definition, retailers, buyers, designers, suppliers and manufacturers are allowed to make up their own minds about whom they associate with and do business with. Placing restrictions on a individual basis suggests otherwise. As I am in no doubt that I will be prevented from exhibiting in future, it would leave little option but to find an alternative exhibition to sell my goods to retailers.
Unless of course the approval was somehow not sent by mistake or the pass is in the mail, please disregard my previous comments and thank you for approving Karen`s pass. I trust you will then put in place steps that this doesn`t happen again.
Just to clarify I will be promoting the wholesale side of my business to my outlets, as I do not want Bill & Brent Spillane threatening to sue me again for the use of the phrase Gift Fair. Can you please clarify or ask your lawyers which Trademarks NZGTA or XPO own as I prefer not to infringe on anyone's copyright or Trademark regardless of who they are.
I would also like to point out we have exhibited for many years at the Gift Fair, untill this year when then extent of the recession required us to save some costs. From what I understand of the association rules I was still a member when I was banned. I am a designer, manufacturer and retailer and we source components for our work and accessories from fellow exhibitors. How that disqualifies us from being a buyer still escapes me. I expect a positive response by 4pm today otherwise I shall take it that your decision still stands and shall proceed however I see fit. I regret taking these steps but feel I have little choice.
