The inaugural Big Design Market in Melbourne was a stunning success, buyers lined up in the morning before opening and the crowds continued all day until closing. 165 Australian and 5 from NZ all designer/ makers. This show has all the hallmarks of something that could change the outlook for the entire creative object industry in Australasia. With a number of galleries and retail outlets already visiting, it could almost become the de-facto tradeshow for the gift industry as well.
Simon and the BDM team set out to create a new show and delivered an overwhelming success, something I haven`t seen since the late Eighties before Shopping centres started to dominate the retail trade. With the recession in its 4th year, the expansion of online sales and the record sales in art shows, the retail landscape as we know it looks like its up for a transformation, hopefully for the better.
